What happens if I don't have thermal paste?

What happens if I don't have thermal paste on my CPU? I wiped it off while cleaning and ordered more of it, but it won't get to my house until wednesday. Should I run the computer without it until then? I just need to install a fee things, and I might be getting a new CPU soon anyways.
