Hi, I hope you guys can help me out here!

I'm helping build a gaming HTPC for a non technical friend, I have some experience building machines but this one has me stumped.

When the Video card is installed the screen goes black (or sometimes coloured vertical stripes) and the PC wont POST. If we take out the video card and use the integrated graphics the system starts up no problem.

Full System Specs:
Motherboard: Asus P8H61-I R2.0
CPU: Intel I5 3550
RAM: TeamGroup Xtreem LV "Frost Edition" 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3
PC3-19200C10 2400MHz Dual Channel Kit

GPU: Powercolor Radeon R9 270X 2048MB GDDR5
PCI-Express Graphics Card

PSU: SuperFlower Amazon 550W "80 Plus Bronze" Power Supply
Harddrive: 120GB Kingston SSDNow V300
Case: BitFenix Prodigy

First checked everything was seated and installed properly, all the power cords connected (including the two to the GPU). All fans spin up but no video.

My first thought was a motherboard BIOS update using the EZ Flash 2, as that's fixed problems for me in the past, but still get the same problem with the latest 1301 BIOS installed.

Next we reset the CMOS, but no joy.

Then tried setting the Primary Display in the BIOS from 'Auto' to 'PCIE' but still no luck.

I can't really think of much more to try. The manual shows an UEFI/Legacy boot option, but the latest BIOS has a very different menu than the one shown in the manual, so I'm not entirely sure how to put it in legacy mode now.

Has anyone here got something I could try to get this running? we're pulling our hair out over it!
Thanks.

Hi Tenvis, Sorry I don't know what pins you are referring to? Do you mean jumpers on the motherboard?

All jumpers on the motherboard that need connecting to the case are, and there is not a set of jumpers for selecting between iGPU and PCIE.

Yea sorry, I meant the power connectors connecting the PSU and the Video card. Also, Have you checked the connectors (VGA Cables, DVI Cables or what you are using) that connects your monitor to the PC? If it is not properly inserted forcing it to render video with gaps.

Thanks for the reply. I've checked the connectors are properly connected between the PSU and Video card. This PSU also has two sets of PCIE power cables and tried both.

We're using HDMI and we've checked that it's properly connected, the same HDMI cable and TV work when connected to the motherboards integrated graphics, but no video (or sometimes vertical colour stripes) when connected to the Video card.

Then it must be a faulty card. You have any other cards there aside from the integrated one? You said that when you run the PC through the Integrated graphics, It runs smooth. Also, Check if the video card is locked on the PCI-e x16 slot.

Ok thanks, we can probably get hold of some bits to swap in and out.

btw the cards definitely seated correctly and the motherboard is clear of the case so there's no short.

Could there be a compatibility issue, or does that not happen any more? or maybe a UEFI issue?

So we finally got it working!

Using a second computer we tested all the components and confirmed they were all working. There are a couple of things that may have been the problem.

The Asus motherboard has an option to switch to PCIE for video out. this setting will only save as PCIE out if it is set while using a PCIE video card which meant we couldn't save it while using the iGPU!

A second problem, we were trying to set up the HTPC using a TV as a monitor, Windows and the BIOS had the Video card set to a default resolution the TV couldn't display. Once it was connected up to proper monitor we were able to set the resolution in Windows to 1080p and when connected back up to the TV it worked.

I hope this gives someone some ideas if the come across the same problem.

hit this same problem with a brand new asus r9 270x ( put it in and comp wouldn't boot )
solved by: updating my bios for my gigabyte z77 mobo using "@bios" software I got from gigabyte website. once I updated using this ( was using iGPU to to use bios updater ) I installed the card and it booted straight away.
