Exactly what the title says.

For example, what happens if you put a GTX 660 in a PCI-E 1.0 slot?

PCI-e is backwards compatible, so devices connected via PCI-e run at the highest common denominator between them. Since the slot is capable of 1.0 timings and signaling, any card installed into it will run at that.

Conversely, if the PCI-e slot is of a higher version number than the graphics card, the combination would use the highest timings and signaling speed of the graphics card.

It will work fine, perhaps not as good performance but if it is a x16 slot then you won't notice anything.....

Perhaps this will help....
