GTX 670 stuttering and frame drops

Hi there,

Up until now, my graphics card has been running very nicely over the past year. However, when playing games, once 5-15 minutes have passed (varies very greatly), the game immediately seizes up and fps drops. For example, in BF3, 60-80 fps becomes 10-15 fps, and in minecraft, 300-400 fps turns into 40-50 fps + slowed down ingame movements (as if in slow motion). All windows animations become very jagged and rough. When the game in question is shut down, the lag stays for a few seconds and then dissipates.

Temperatures seem normal, both cpu and gpu are below 60 when this lag happens, so overheating should be out of the question.

The only thing I discovered was that the core clock of the gpu, which always operated at factory clock 1019 MHz, cranks itself up to 1137 mhz during this lag. In an attempt to counter this, I opened up afterburner and underclocked the gpu so it is forced to stay under 1019 Mhz (both power limit and core voltage by default are maxed out). This temporarily curbs the problem however after a few minutes stutter lag manifests in the game at the new clock speed, which completely kills the gaming mood for me.

I'm using a 720W PSU, so the gtx 670 should have enough juice to run at factory speeds.

Any suggestions on what I could do?

Using 331.65 drivers, MSI GTX 670 PE OC, i5-3570, 8gb ram.

Thanks

I don't think i'll be able to get a spare PSU at this time. I'm using a Gigabyte Superb 720W. After reading some reviews, it could very well be the PSU since its reported to only have 504 watts on the 12V rail, not 720 at all.

Yeah, I think its the boost. Its really sporadic, the game can stutter lag for a few seconds then become normal again. Is there a way to disable the gpu boost feature for the gtx 670? Or do I need to do some kind of bios editing /flashing

After reverting back to 306 drivers, everything is fine again. Sorry, I have should tried this earlier before posting a thread about it. Anyway, I guess I'll never update to any newer driver unless its absolutely crucial since the ones right now mainly focus on the 700 series. Thanks for the help.
