can i sli a gigabyte gtx680oc 4gb with a gtx 680oc 2gb

system specs asrock x79 extreme 9 mobo, 3960x cpu 16gb 1600mhz ram,corsair h100 cooler,750w bronze 80 powercool modular psu with a 4gb and 2gb gigabyte gtx 680oc but cannot get nvidia to recognise sli, have tried enable- gen3 for pcie 3.0 comes up on gpuz as pcie 3.0 16 x 1 and @ 8 x 1

even if it works the 4gb card will downscale to 2gb

thanks, i understand how the vram works, i was trying to work out if there was something in my system causing the problem that i am simply overlooking,ie mobo compatability for 3.0 pcie,my power supply as not being very computer literate with sli setups

i don't think the 3960x have support for pci 3.0. only the new ivybridge based has support for pci 3.0

Thanks for the link, you are right about conflicting reviews some say support some say no support and some say, as you mentioned the "combined support".
