Black screen with cursor after start-up

Recently, I've been having a variety of problems as can be read here.

Since two days ago, the previous problem of tearing graphics and BSODs has evolved and now everytime after windows start-up, a black screen with a cursor appears, followed by an automatic restart and BSOD message. The problem stops when I uninstall video card drivers and when I use safe mode.

Yesterday, I have installed a new PSU, CPU and same model of the previous motherboard, however the problem still persisted after installing video card drivers. The video card is new as I have bought it few days ago and a different problem happens when I install the old GPU.

The two BC codes after BSODs are: 116 and 124.
I've tried using a TV instead of the monitor, however the problem still occurs even then. It might be worth saying that the monitor takes longer to load screen image than before.

I'm not sure what to do at this point. Could the problem be caused by faulty RAM or hard drive? I've run memtest86 and it found no errors. Could it be the drivers' fault? The issues started occuring suddenly out of nowhere and happen with different versions of drivers.

BIOS is up-to-date.

The new components are:
AMD FX 6300
OZC ModxStream 600w
ASUS M5A78L-M/USB3

Please help.

I've tried the old GPU, Powercolor HD 6850 1gb to see what happens and it still had the problem with horizontal bars and bsod after installing drivers. However, the monitor booted up right away and displayed bios settings and everything up to the start-up screen. The new GPU, Asus HD 7770 2gb, still results in a black screen with cursor on start-up when video card drivers are installed. However, when this GPU is installed, the monitor doesn't turn on until the part where it says 'Loading Windows'. BIOS displays when I try the TV instead of the monitor, but in the end it still shows a black screen with cursor on start-up.

What could be the problem here? Could be it that neither the monitor nor the TV are being able to cope with the new GPU or could the new GPU be faulty?

I think your graphics card by default is sending video out of one of its graphics ports and your monitor is not connected to it. when winodws loads the driver the other the driver starts to use the other port.

first I would get the video connection working correctly from the graphics card to the monitor while in BIOS after that I would reset the BIOS to its defaults or toggle on/off some hardware controlled by the BIOS to force a DMI pool rebuild so the BIOS will report the correct hardware changes to the OS (you changed video cards but from the same vendor, hardware change may have not been correctly detected and reported by BIOS)

I couldn't find any settings related to the graphics card or any video connections while in BIOS. I did however reset the BIOS to its defaults but that did not change anything.

It looks like there is a hardware issue, like faulty MB or faulty GPU or PSU. To isolate the problem :

1. Take out all the RAM sticks and start the PC, if it beeps then probably the MB is ok, else its the culprit.

2. Try another known good working PSU.

3. Try to format and clean install OS.

4. Check the HDD/SSD health : http://crystalmark.info/software/CrystalDiskInfo/index-e.html

5. Maybe the HD 7770 is faulty, to make sure try it on another system.

I have also had the same problem with the black screen only showing a cursor. I'm now considering reinstalling Windows. :( But then again it could be a hardware issue for you.

you should start your own thread. The potential cause for a black screen in the general case is much different than what what could have caused a black screen in this case.
