Hey guys,

As a first-time PC builder, it took me a long time to decide on a graphics card. I finally settled on the Sapphire 7870, because at $199 it was appropriate for my GPU budget allocation.

Then, I started taking a closer look at the R9 200 series, specifically the 270x. I also did a little research, and found that many people say that the R9s are just rebrandings of the 7000 series.

Not knowing much, I'd like to ask some more experienced people: Should I switch out my choice of a 7870 for an R9 GPU? If so which one and why?
Any advantages/disadvantages?

My current choice for my build: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814202025

Thanks a lot guys.

P.S. I can spend 20$ more on my GPU if needed.

Not worth switching to a 280 or 290 with the card you have considering how much you'd have to spend. I'd leave off until the next "gen" of cards. I have a GTX670 and am doing the same. Might be worth grabbing another 7870 and going the Crossfire route.

7870 is nearly equals to 270/270x, check a review here at toms, and you will see small difference only
the only reason I would change 7870 to a 270/270x would be a price. Get whichever is cheaper
It is generally better to go with a single more powerful card then multiple weaker card, as there is a smaller possibility for driver issue or cooling issue

At the moment, the r9 gpus are bad value due to the price jump caused by bitcoin mining purchases. The 270x will not provide any significant performance increase and if anything, you should get a gtx 770 or a second 7870.
