DVD not playing

What DVD player do you have installed on the laptop? Have you tried something like VLC media player (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html)? If not, download it and give it a try. I know it will play DVD's. Just out of curiosity is it a DVD+R or a DVD-R? Some computers are picky about playing one format or the other.
