Last week i built my first computer and it worked for about 2 days. But the next day when i woke up it would not turn on. i tried the screwdriver trick and all but nothing would happen. i also used the paperclip trick for my psu which is a seasonic fully modular 660w 80 plus platinum and it was working. I replaced my motherboard to a asrock z77 extreme 4 and it worked for a day then stoped. When i flick my power supply on my gpu lights turn on but i can turn the computer on! im very frustrated WHAT IS HAPPENING? is my psu killing my motherboards? please help.

Solution

SSD on SATA3_0

HDD on SATA3_1

Optical Drive on SATA2_2

These SATA ports should all be on the Intel Z77 chipset.

SATA3_A0 and SATA3_A1 are on the ASMedia ASM1061 SATA controller chip.

I installed as many as i could i ( 6 ) there's one that i cannot but i do not see anything shorting the board out no metal or anything how could i possibly have a one motherboard that died after 3 days of first use and now maybe this one ? what else would maybe short out my board? thanks

If it you can't seem to find a short, try to start your system with just one stick of ram installed, see if it's faulty ram. If it boots up, then rma your ram. If it doesn't, try to remove your gpu and run onboard graphics. Try to narrow down the cause, btw, what are the rest of your system specs?

Ok i will try that but it was working with the ram and gpu installed, and was for also working for 2 days with the other motherboard, and when i turn the power switch on the psu the lights on my graphics card are on. but my specs are:

Case: Fractal desighn define r4 case
Processor: Intel i5 3570k
Motherboard: Asrock z77 extreme 4 1155
RAM: Ripjaws X series 2x4 gb
Graphics Card: Asus gtx 770 direct cu 2 cooling 2gb memory
Hard drive: western digital blue caviar 1TB
SSD: Kingston hyper x 120gb
Power Supply: Seasonic 660 Watt 80+ platinum fully modular powersupply
Optical Drive: Asus ( borrowed from a friend )

I just tried to boot with 1 stick of Ram then 1 ram and no graphic card but no luck. My graphic card lights only light up when in the motherboard. is my Power supply not generating enough power?

I doubt it's the power supply, especially a new seasonic platinum, but you can't rule it out either. Only way to test it is with proper equipment. Do you have another psu to test with? I'm leaning towards something not being connected properly to your motherboard or your cpu actually died, which is very rare. Try checking all your connections again, make sure your heatsink is properly installed as well. If you have another pair of ram sticks try those, also try using the other set of ram slots. Could be a dead slot, perhaps from a sudden power spike.

i can try my friends powersupply who has a identical system to mine but he's weary about it and do you really think my cpu could have died even when working yesterday and with my old mother board last week ? it has the stock intel cooler on it and the tempertures never hit 60. This is realley buming me out since it was working so nicely the first time around. Can you explain why my motherboard powerbuttons and little screen do not light up or no?

Ok, good you mention the motherboard lights not working, if you did I didn't pick up on it. That rules out cpu, it means the board is not getting any power at all. Your gpu lights up because it is being powered by the pci-e power adapters coming from the psu.
Check to make sure the 24pin adapter is secured to your board, try another psu to rule that out, otherwise something did short your board. You're going to need to go through all the spots to make sure no metal is touching your board.

Well im happy to hear that it is probably not the cpu and could i have realley shorted 2 boards in about a 5 day span? i will try to get my friend to let me try his psu asap but nothing will happen to his right? hes worried... we are first time builders but his is working fine. And i clicked the clear cmos button right when it stopped working and it made a flash and i THINK beeb but after that nothing was working still. i will try to get my friends psu

It's possible for that to happen if you didn't ground yourself properly while building. Static is killer, did you ground yourself?

Oh god no i did not... should i get one of those bracelets? but why would i still work for a day or two ???

The Power and Reset Smart Switches on the motherboard should light up when the power switch on the PSU is turned on. That is used to indicate that the motherboard is receiving standby power from the PSU's +5V standby circuit.

The +5Vsb on the PSU is actually a separate linear mode power supply on the PSU's circuit board.

Hmm ok they are not lighting up though ? neither is the screen, when the computer first wouldnt turn on i used the clear cmos button but from then on it would not work and as the person above me mentioned and asked if i was grounded which i was not.

That's true but the 12v rail should still be good. The mobo is not receiving power at all, it is possible that the psu is not working right, only way to know is to test the system with another one.

i think my friend is going to allow me to try his but if that doesn't work do you think me not being grounded ruined both my boards? i mean they worked though as i said the first for 2 days 2nd for 1 day? so does the static not immediately take affect or something?

If this is your motherboard: (check picture #2 carefully)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?gclid=CJeBupPW5bsCFcZZ7Aod8X4ARg&Item=N82E16813157293&nm_mc=KNC-GoogleAdwords&cm_mmc=KNC-GoogleAdwords-_-pla-_-Intel+Motherboards-_-N82E16813157293&ef_id=OPTOUT:20140104232830:s

There are clearly eight (8) holes in the board which should be support by a stand off mounted to the floor of your case and attached with a screw..... (you mentioned six (6) which is not correct...)

SO, pull the motherboard out of the case and start again..... count all stand off in the case be sure there are ONLY 8...

IF you only mounted 6 and then install a big GPU, you could bend and very easy crack the motherboard....

My gpu is pretty large and i dont think i can put all 8 standoffs in though ? and should the standoff screws be touching the little metal circles on the board mounts?
EDIT i can only find 7?

Not being properly grounded can definitely be a reason, now depending on how much static is produced it can affect the system immediately or cause small damage to a component that will break once a bigger load is applied. Your best bet right now is to test with a new psu so you can start ruling things out and figure out the problem

Ok right now i am just taking it out and apart and installing the other standoff its right under the gpu so maybe it was pushing the board down or something would it have anything todo with not using the sata cables that came with the motherboard, no right?

GUYS I JUST INSTALLED THE &TH STANDOFF ( THE ONLY ONE I CAN FIND ) AND NOW MY THINGS POWER ON BUT THE ALL THE LIGHTS ARE RED BESIDES THE GPU AND THE MOTHERBOARD SCREEN READS ERROR # 55 . ALL THE FANS SPIN BUT THEN THEY STOP AFTER 6 SECONDS WITH THE ERROR CODE ON SIGHT.

PROGRESS!
