What would you say is better for gaming/overall performance? Don't send me Benchmark links because I seriously don't understand it.

The R9 270 is more powerful... and its your only choice! I can't find stock of HD 7850s anywhere without it being priced lower than the 270, and its the same story for the GTX 650 Ti Boost. What a shame, because those where really two kickass cards for the price.

Thanks a lot guys, and yeah the 7850 seems to have dissapeared same with the 650 ti and the ti boost, I've found a lovely 270 for the same price as a 7850 so I'm going to get that for my build. I would get the 270x but that's sadly right outside my budget

It isn't worth it for his budget. If he needs the performance he can overclock, but they are the same silicone, so minimal performance boost for the price.

Its about 15% faster all round! (The non reference slight boost models, they are cheaper than reference anyway. And they are slower) Use less power. Plus the non reference boards are at good stock levels, the prices are under RRP.
No overheating issues with the non reference versions of the X class cards. Some 270X are coming with 4gb of Vram. that's pretty decent future proofing right there! and they are only $20 dearer
Plus the 270X will run 1080P at max everything on nearly every game (except Crysis of course :p) Then 1440p at high settings. for a $220-270 video card. its a pretty sweet deal
