After manually uninstalling office 2010 professional plus, I can't reinstall. I get a pop up as the install file has completed exctracing saying a problem has caused the program to stop working correctly. PLEASE help as I am without any office applications

Use System Restore to an earlier point and see if you can use the DVD to repair your installation. You will then most likely have to call the Microsoft number to get a new activation.
