I'm trying to put together my first build, and I have a big issue. When I plug in the 24-pin ATX cable, everything runs fine. The case fans, cpu fan, graphics card fans, hdd, and dvd drive alll work fine, and obviously the CPU doesn't turn on. However, once I plug in the 8-pin 12v ATX cable, everything goes wrong. The CPU fan spins a bit then stops, and the internal speaker gives the repeating short beeps that mean power failure. What am I doing wrong?

on the power supply cables there two cables that can be used one is a six plus two vidoe power cable that the wrong cable. on new power supplys there can be one four pin black cable or two of them with a clip in the middle to make eight pins. on the mb check the bios rev of the mb and the mb cpu guild if the mb is old it may not post right till the bios file is updated. also check that your cpu is on the guild.a lot of issues now is people trying to run the new 9000 cpu that are high wattage on a mb that cant run them.
