Horrible performance in games in the last few weeks

No idea what the problem might be, but I'm having horrid performance in most games recently (Metro Last Light at 3-4 fps...). Was able to run them without a hiccup before.

I have:
AMD Radeon HD 6970
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 920 @ 2.67GHz
Win 8 64 bit
OCZ Agility 3 SSD for Windows
Samsung HD103UJ for data and programs
8 gigs of RAM

All drivers are up-to-date (tested on touslesdrivers.com).

When I check on http://systemrequirementslab.com/ it tells me I should be able to easily run the games (above recommended specs) but when I run them I get very choppy performance, well below enjoyable.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Below is a screenshot of the temperature. The spike is when I started Metro Last Light then cools a bit while I navigate through the menu. As soon as I get into the playable sequence the performance is horrible. Temp stays stable at around 50°C while the game runs (or should I say crawls? :p ).

Edit: others replied while I was typing. Windows is also up-to-date, as are all other programs, I use Secunia PSI to know when I need an update. Antivirus scan running right now, but also is scheduled weekly, I'll let you know if it does find anything though.

And I did clean the PC a few days ago, but it didn't help.
