Hi tomsHardware-Community,

so far I was here merely as a reader and learner, now I got a serious issue with my GPU and thought this would probably be the best place to ask for help, because I've seen a lot of knowledgeable and helpful people around here. Let it be said, that I am no native speaker, so expect the one or other odd word. So in advance let me say thanks for looking at the issue at hand.

Current Rig:
Windows 7 64-Bit
Intel i5 3750k @ 2.4
Sapphire HD 7850
2x 4GB DDR3 Ram Kingston Hyper X
Asrock Z68 Pro3 Gen3
Seagate Barracuda 1TB
Sharkoon WPM 600

Issue:
So I bought the aforementioned GPU roughly a year ago to integrate it into my existing rig. At first, everything was fine and running great for maybe half a year ( not super sure ). After that time, I found that my Display wasn't always turning on when booting up like it should. After some testing I found out that everything runs fine and the pc is booting normally when turning on ( even the fans of the gpu ) except there is just no signal from the GPU. The internal graphics adapter of the mainboard however works everytime. ( Bios Settings are set to boot with the external GPU in the PCI-E slot. I also switched a few times from PCI-E to PCI to internal graphics just to make sure.)
When I would turn the pc on and off a few times it eventually would accept the Sapphire, that is, I would get a signal.

Now after this occured more and more I've done some research and found out that alot of people had this issue with the very same mainboard. I even found one official comment from asrock stating this would occur from time to time with some boards of this product line. So for me the thing was solved.

To not be without a computer for many weeks (I work from home and play games with this rig) I decided to buy a replacement board before sending the other in in regards to warranty.
I planned to have this board as a reserve later on. so I bought myself a MSI B75MA-P45. Today I got my new mainboard and just wanted to test it properly before preparing the package for asrock with the faulty mainboard. Guess what? Same issue! Internal graphics work, Sapphire doesn't. Checked Bios, settings are correct.

Now I asked a friend over with his pc. I swapped his Nvidia 650GTX with my Sapphire. And again his GPU doesn't work in my rig - the internal graphics do - and my Sapphire works in his computer just fine. So since 2 completely different mainboards got the issue but swapping out the GPU showed that it isn't faulty too, I guess that leaves only the Power Supply? 600Watt should be more than enough as far as I know and everything else works with the PSU. I have never heard of such an issue, where only the GPU doesn't work anymore. The power cable for PCI-E should also not be at fault here, as I have 2, one of them never used, and this second one also didn't work. What do you people think?

Sincerely
Chris

Thanks for answering!

I didn't know that great list but have gone through the steps I didn't do before except step 23. Working on that one right now but I don't expect this should yield much, as I can start up the computer just fine with everything plugged in, I just need to plug the dvi cable into the internal graphics to get video.

Will test the working psu of my friend after step 23.

So step23 revealed nothing. Everything worked beside the GPU signal.

And now I am at a total loss. Even the PSU of my friend didn't solve the problem. I had only one working Ram, the GPU and the Mainboard with CPU in it, while we tested his PSU. I will try this setup one more time with breadboarding.

Update:
Breadboarding it didn't change anything. I also flashed the Bios of my Mainboard and my GPU now and again... nothing. My old GeForce 260Ti works -.-

I also just found out that apparently a lot of people have the exact same issue like that all involving an Intel I Core, a 3gen PCI-E slot and a newer GPU. But so far I've only found discontinued threads without any solution. My guess is the CPU won't recognize the newer GPU.

Update:

I got my hands on another computer of a mate, who has the same cpu line (intel core i5 2500k).

- Putting my Sapphire in his completely working computer again got me no display.
- Putting in my wife's GeForce worked just fine
- Finally I installed his cpu in my breadboarded mainboard setup and again my wife's card as well as my sapphire don't get me a display.

I found those results even more confusing as it still stands, that the issue involves a PCI-E 3rdGen, an i5 Core and a newer GPU but on the other hand my cpu can't be the (only?) culprit here as the one of my friend yielded samish results. I also called the technicians of my computer store and we both agreed that it most likely is an incompatibility rather than a malfunction. But they will test both things, just in case. So I now send my stuff to the store and hope that they won't take months with this as I depend on my computer.

I will report back, when I get some results from them (will call them in a week, when the package likely already arrived and was opened. If you have some insight yourself, let me know so we can make this a future reference for others with the problem.
