If I plug a 4 pin molex on a case fan upside down to the female plug to make it run at 5v, will it damage my components?

No! In fact there is another speed there, if you wire it right.

You also have 7 volts, if you use the yellow for positive, and the red for negative.

I've have been doing that for over 20 years.

Actually rewiring should be done for 5v also, as you have to force the plugs together.

What you do is pull the pins out of the Molex and move them to the appropriate holes.

You can buy a pin extractor, for very little.
It's a sleeve that fits over the pin, closing the little tab on the side of the pin.
It then just pulls out.
Make sure the tabs are sticking out, and it's ready to plug in again.

Truth is I have never owned a tool.
It is just one of those things I always mean to get, but when I need it I can't wait, and I make or jury rig a tool.

If you do it to a pass through, make sure you mark it, as you wouldn't want to plug it into a drive by accident.
If it is the only plug on the fan, then there is nothing that can go wrong.

Edit:
I just did it again!
I had to pull 40 of them on my sister in-laws Harley, to replace the front end.
Got to get one of them tools!
