I have just installed my first SSD in my system (Corsair Force 3 120GB) but it is running on SATA 2. As SATA 2 is 300mb/s should my SSD not be running at 300mb/s as its max is 500 and something? I did a check on Crystal disk and found i was getting 196mb/s and 107mb/s, a bit slow? I dont know if i have set up something wrong or if the only way i would be able to speed things up is to run it on SATA 3. This leads me to my next question. As my motherboard only has SATA 2 do i have to get a new motherboard to get SATA 3 or can i get a SATA 3 add on card? My motherboard is a ga-78lmt-usb3. Thanks

If you have an available PCIe 2.0 or later slot, that would be a cheap way to get SATA III and improve your SSD speed. Of course, a new MB would have other benefits. But yes, the SATA II interface is no doubt dragging down performance.
