Hi guys,

I am about to buy a new gaming rig to replace my 4 year old current one that has been nothing short of amazing.
I bought it from Digital Storm and have been extremely happy with everything, probably going to buy this one from them as well.

Ok, so to my question, I am currently using a Geforce GTX570 and want to get the best I can for my budget for the new computer. What should I go for:

1. 780Ti
2. 780
3. 2x 770

I am trying to get best performance I can and stay as "future proof" as I can. In terms of budget, I can afford all the options above.

My thought process was that if I get the 780Ti today, maybe in a few months I can add another one if I needed more horse power but not sure if this is the right way to think about it.

Anyway, thank you for looking and for your time.

Gurt.

Solution

Each of the cards in SLI needs to have the same data in memory all the time, so in effect 2 + 2 = 2.

If you're going for 4K, 2 GB is just not enough. Even 3 GB is a bit marginal.

The 780 Ti is of course faster than the regular 780, but the latter is...
Yeah if you get a 780 Ti you can add a second one later. But the same goes for the 780. A pair of them should be plenty.

You could also get an R9 290 (faster than the 780) or R9 290X (close to the 780 Ti).

The 770 isn't a good deal if you end up needing more than 2 GB graphics memory.

First off Sli'd 770's will out perform the 780 and Ti version, however a single GPU will run smoother and cooler. The 780 Ti is currently the best single GPU for gaming. SLI is only really useful for large scale resolution like multi-monitor setups.

Hey Sakkura,

Thank you for your reply.
I will stick with Nvidia at this time, is the 780Ti much better than the 780? I am driving one 30# monitor at 2560x1600 at all times, gaming as well.

I can't wait to jump on the 4K wave once more reasonable priced monitors are available and will probably do it with this new computer.

Thanks again,
Roy.

It's crazy that 770 SLI is cheaper than 780TI and performs better.
One question though: if each of the 770 has 2GB RAM, does that mean that when SLI'd, I have 4GB at my disposal? If I add a 3rd card, I have 6GB?

Thank you,
Roy.

In a perfect world yes. not in this one heh, no V-Ram doesn't stack however the multiple GPU's 256-bit buffer will stack in a sense which is where the increase in performance comes from. 3 770's in SLI is a lot of horse power. However like I stated before single GPU's run smoother and cooler.

The 780 Ti is of course faster than the regular 780, but the latter is still better value. And a pair of them represents a ton of GPU power already.
