External monitor not working with laptop closed

I have an old Fujitsu laptop running as an HTPC, and it has worked great for a while. However, I unplugged everything to rearrange things in the living room and now when I close my laptop's lid the external display won't work. I have left the "What to do when the lid is closed" settings the same as they were before (Do Nothing). The external display works fine when the laptop is open, but as soon as the lid is closed the monitor blacks out. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've searched several forums trying to find a solution to this problem, but wasn't able to find anything. However, if this problem has been solved before, links are appreciated!

Sorry my answer was a bit rushed there wasn't it!

About the control panel thing, i meant to say the display settings which allows you to change the external display to be duplicated or extended etc etc. Try using the 'Duplicate' setting, my theory is that it should treat the output as a 'laptop' display shall we say, so the laptop shouldn't stop outputting when the lid is closed. That's what i think anyways, if it made ant sense!

The settings is located ---> Control panel/ Hardware & Sound... And the submenu under displays 'Connect to an external display'.

Should be self explanatory when you get there, click the tap under 'Multiple Displays' and set too duplicate. :)

Edit - Looking at another forum, a person said that you should...

You could try changing the output source of the laptop so it just outputs to the external monitor instead of the laptops screen. Try the buttons on the keyboard, if not then change the display options in control panel.

Thanks for the quick reply! I did try changing the output to just the monitor, but no signal was sent to the external monitor. Using the keyboard didn't seem to help either, and I haven't been able to find any settings in the control panel to remedy the situation. Any other possible solutions?

Thanks very much for your suggestions! I finally fixed it by actually going into the Intel settings instead of the generic control panel display settings. That got me sorted out. I appreciate all the help!
