Trying to format drive that has OS but do not want to install windows to format.

Just got all my parts for my new computer, got and ssd, want to use my old 1tb in it as well. I want to format the harddrive with the OS on it but it won't let me because the OS is on it, the only thing online I could find is to use a windows recovery disk to do it which would install windows.
 
Solution
USAFRet
Disconnect all other drives
Connect the SSD
Boot from DVD and install
After everything is verified working, connect the other drives
Format the old ones as needed.

other recovery options exists like parted magic live cd..its a linux based utility OS that will run live from the dvd..
