First I'd like to say thanks to this community. While I was picking components and building this PC (my first time) these forums were a very handy resource, almost every question I had had already been asked and answered on here, which is what's lead me to create an account and has allowed me to finish my first ever PC build earlier today.

My problem is that the wireless adapter I have in my new PC is getting slower download speeds than my laptop did. My laptop used to get a pretty solid 35mb/s while my PC's getting about 20mb/s, which occasionally drops. Although my new PC's pretty much where my laptop was, I thought the issue might be the signal and the fact the PC's adapter is at the back and wedged against the wall between a bookcase and my desk, whereas the laptop was on top of the desk. However, I've noticed that my upload speed on this PC is actually the same, and usually slightly higher, as I was getting on my laptop (used to get about 12mb/s, now getting 15mb/s). Surely if it were the signal BOTH the upload and download speeds would be affected/slower? Any ideas?

Yes, you need to get those antennae out where they can get more signal that has not been attenuated by all the metal and walls. If it is USB, place it on a 15ft. USB extension and move it to a good spot. If PCIe, if the antennae are removable you can get cable that is specifically made to attach antennae and move them up and away from the back. Your other choice would be to move the computer or go to powerline adapters (good ones -- 600Mbps).
