When I plug it in the light lights up but my computer does not read or recognize it as if it's not plugged in at all. Everytime it's plugged it makes a faint vibrating sound every second. How do I recover the data on it, it's full of very sentimental pictures accumulated over a decade

Solution

The hard disk drive itself should still be okay. Those things are built to take a beating. However, the enclosure may have been damaged, and it's possible that a connector came lose inside.

Open up the enclosure and remove the hard disk drive. Have someone attach it to your PC like a traditional one and see if it works. If this doesn't work, you will need to take it to a specialist.
