Hello so I recently got the R9 290 and went to get on minecraft. I know minecraft is a cpu based game - I have a fx 8320 for my cpu and with my old gpu which is the gtx 650 ti I got around 300 fps, and now I get around 120. I have 2 - pci express cable 1. It has 1 8 pin and 1 6 pin. So 1 cable is plugging into the R9 290's 8 pin spot and the other cable is plugging into the 6 pin spot. I thought it was very weird to be hitting that low of fps in minecraft so I hopped on battlefield 4. I was playing dawnbreaker on HIGH settings and was only getting a good 50-70 fps I know this card hits around a solid 70 fps on the reveiws I watched for bf4. PLEASE HELP.

Update: Getting around 30 fps in minecraft and 40 fps in battlefield 4 on high settings with all that stupid shit disabled bout to send this card back and get a 780 ti.

2- restart

3-install the catayst controller that came with r9 290 in the CD it came with

4-report results

I said 120 but that was before I set it on 16 chunks.

sounds like you have a driver problem or something, have you used driversweeper to uninstall all the old nvidia drivers and amd drivers, then clean install only the latest whql driver. also the r9 290 is known for thermal throttling unless you have an aftermarket cooler on it, and i believe some certain amd drivers run a different fan speed profile that gan give different performance levels. I would say the 8320 would bottleneck that card in many games too.

check gpu and cpu temperatures and clock speeds to see if anything is throttling under load, check cpu and gpu usage to make sure at leat gpu usage is quite high, if not then might be a bottleneck somewhere. And update motherboard bios.

Firo40 your response doesn't help at all... There is nothing wrong with the CPU and if you don't plan to offer actual help don't bother replying.....

Corpe4 when you changed cards did you clear out your previous drivers also?

Uninstalled nvidia drivers then rebooted used guru to uninstall then did same with amd drivers - I guess ill try reinstalling amd drivers again because I have no clue what else to do.

edit:
It did help a little bit but still not getting very good fps at all going to reinstall amd drivers now.

The only other thing I can think of at this point is maybe re-installing the game or try creating a new world and see if the problem is still there. I had a problem with my sons Minecraft game where the game became glitched after I upgraded from Windows 8 to 8.1. It seemed like the saved game didn't like the change so maybe you're experiencing something similar.

Well it's on a multiplayer server that I could get 300 fps on with a gtx 650 ti and also when I open msi afterburner and the fans crank up I average around 80 fps I have no clue what the problem is ill try reinstalling my game.

Update: I am using a dvi cable to connect my monitor to the GPU could that have an effect?

- tried reinstalling the game nothing happened same results as before guess I should get ready to send it back while I still have a warranty

- going to try some other things.

Update: Could it be one of my pci express cables or could it be my power supply which is here:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817152047

- I average around 50 fps on low in battlefield 4 when on low and looking towards action.

That's definitely strange. I'd send the card back. Maybe its got some crazy BIOS problem or something. You should maybe get a 780 or 780 ti or wait until custom PCB and heatsink 290/290xs are available.

Well will a 780 be compatible with my build

R9 290
fx 8320
ASRock 970 Extreme3 R2.0 AM3+ AMD 970 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard
RAIDMAX RX-735AP 735W ATX 12V v2.3/EPS 12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Full Modular Power Supply

Could the issue be I am using 1 seperate pci express cable to connect to a 6 slot in the gpu and i'm using a different pci express cable to connect to the 8 pin slot on the gpu.

- I got a cable like this with my R9 290: It shows the power cable with a lable in one of the pictures of it am I supposed to use this because when I tried it made 5 beeps.

Any PCIe video card is compatible with any motherboard with a PCIe 16x slot. whether it be 1.0, 2.0 or 3.0, it doesn't matter. As long as it fits in a PCIe x16 slot, it SHOULD work. Clearly it's not guaranteed though as there are broken cards. But I highly recommend a 780 ti. Amazing card and amazing drivers with cool features.

780 ti is alittle out of my price range considering it's 200 dollars more.

Update: Plugged in one of my pci express cables in it the problem was before I was using 1 cable to power the 8 pin and that same one to power the 6 pin slot.
- Didn't help at all performance wise I also have a plug with a 6 pin on one end and on the other side it has 2 different 3 pin things that you would connect with a led light it looks like.

- it kind of looks like this but with just a 6 pin on the end:

I think this might be a problem I am looking in my catalys software and under Graphics Overdrive it shows the info about my card it says that

Activity: 0%
GPU clock: 300 | MHZ which I thought the core clock was 947
Memory clock: 1250MHz
Power: 0%
Temperature: 61 C
Fan Speed: 59%

So considering the clock speed is down that may be the issue? Also there is no power?

thats what happens w\hen the card is idle, it downclocks. put it under load and the figures should go back to normal.

I'd be surpirsed if that completely sorted your issue. I feel that the 8320 is actually a shit CPU with terrible developer support and is a dying breed. Most developers are basing optimisations on AMD architecture because of console (and I'm not talking about mantle here, just the 28nm architecture that is the basis of the next 8-10 years of gaming). The AMD cpu's are simply awful however, when compared to intel (im using the 8350 black edition o/c @ 4.4ghz) Ignore benchmarks and just remember, intel simply doesn't dissapoint. it just doesnt happen and I wish I had considered this before pairing one with my 290x. infact, the old top-end athlon out-performs the 8350 when paired with an R9 280x o/c vapor-x because I've witnessed it.

All in all, I feel I'm too late to offer this insight (which cost me £750 to establish) but one thing I do know is, the nvidia 780ti is the best card going, so I do hope that your processor doesn't cause you too much bottleneck or dissapointment.

one last point to make - minecraft is noted for not plaing very nice with minecraft and it is to do with java, and the amount of ram the game allocates to the application. It is changeable, and it makes a significant difference so I'm going to go try and find that solution for you now because it works but takes a bit of tinkering.

Good luck.

I am sure that your cpu is bottlenecking your R9 290, and changing it for a 780 Ti will make things worse ... Overclocking the cpu or even buying a better one will fix the problem. Keep in mind that Minecraft only uses 4 threads.

Upgrade your cpu to an Intel i5/i7 or downgrade your gpu a lower end graphics card.

I have a similar problem with the R9 290X. I only get 60 FPS on Minecraft on low settings with random frame-drops dow to 30 FPS. I really don`t know what the problem is and by the way, I shouldnt be bottlenecking my card since I have an i7 4770K not overclocked.

Please help me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
