Windows 8 File Association Icon Glitch

The other day I accidentally made the file association; .dll always open with Notepad. Being a neat freak that I am, I downloaded a program called FileTypesMan to unassociate the file extension; dll with Notepad. If you aren't familiar with this program this next part may not make a lot of sense. In the program I unassociated the Notepad program from having it open every time I click a .dll file. I also changed the icon back to the default icon (the two gears). The problem is that when I changed the icon back to it's default a bunch (not all, but a majority) of other file extension icons changed into the gears as well. I can change the .dll file extension icon something different, but all other file extensions icons change with it. I have tried to individually change other file extensions icons back to it's default, but FileTypesMan already shows that all of my file extensions have their default icon (which they don't). I have tried using CCleaner's clean and registry cleaner, but that didn't work. If anybody knows a fix without reinstaling Windows 8 that would be nice.

Okay well I tried the sfc/scannow thing and it said there were problems, but Windows couldn't fix it. I tried opening the log, but it said "access is denied". I said eff it and reinstalled Windows altogether. This next thing I can not believe. The problem was still not fixed, a bunch of my apps (including .dll files) now have that green "pick an app" arrow for the icon. And I don't have any viruses I checked. What happened to the good old days with XP you could change an icon very easily. I almost seriously don't even care anymore because I'm so fed up with Microsoft. Dear Microsoft go :finger: yourselves. If it weren't for so many apps that run on Windows I would have been running Ubuntu a long time ago.

Quick question though: can you use a Windows 8 product key on Windows 8.1 software by going into Settings<Change PC Hardware<Activate Windows?

Yeah I didn't format the drive that's probably why. I just inserted the Windows 8 disk and clicked the keep "nothing" option and let it reinstall. And since I'm back on Windows 8 and not 8.1 I am afraid if I upgrade to 8.1 before entering in the product key it won't work. I'm still waiting for my copy of Windows 8 to come in the mail. The disk I used was my friends, but he already used his product key.
