The r9 290/GTX 780 or 290x/780 Ti

Unfortunately they're priced higher than they used to because of the litecoin mining craze

And these are the cheapest ones that are closest in specs to the 280x?

They're the next step up from the 280x (or GTX 770), quite a fair bit more expensive to be honest

Would you say that it is worth the upgrade?

I wouldn't buy these reference cards though, they run hot and noisy as well, I couldn't find any aftermarket cards on pcpartpicker which weren't expensive as heck

What is your opinion on the Gigabyte one? Is it exactly the same as the other 947 MHz ones?

It's the same, it uses the same reference cooler which we would not really recommend for now until the prices of the aftermarket cards go down

Ok. I'll just stick to getting a 280x.

You'll be fine with the 280x as long as you're playing at 1080p or so :D

I will be. Hopefully with my build I will be able to actually see the 144Hz my monitor has :D

oh wow 144Hz, you'll actually see a benefit with a beefier card since you have such a high refresh rate

Perhaps a GTX 780?

Hard to say how powerful the next generation of cards is gonna be, but the 280x is a safe bet for $300 or so

Ahh I don't know. I don't have that much money left over, haha! Maybe if I can drop a couple bucks on the build so far, I'll think about it.

Haha it's definitely nicer to save some cash for the future (maybe a great value down the line in the next few generations or so)

Would you actually be able to know where I could save some cash? Without making the performance go down of course, haha.

To be honest that looks pretty solid to me, great motherboard and PSU as well, though you could spend a little more towards a 990FX board for better overclocking results

To be honest, I don't plan on overclocking. Mainly because I don't have too much experience with computers and would really hate to see $1100 go to waste. I also found this (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...) MSI motherboard, and it seems pretty good. What do you think? It saves a couple bucks so I may be able to get that 780 :D

I've heard that those MSI 970 boards have pretty inadequate cooling on the VRM which makes it rubbish for overclocking (you might want to in future anyway) and not really a good recommendation in general. I'd probably stick with the Asus board for sheer reliability

And I'm just going to shell out the extra cash for the 780. It'll be worth it in the long run.

Not a bad unit made by CWT, however they use fairly cheap Samxon capacitors which do not handle temperatures too well (not too ideal for stressful situations)

The modular (CX600M) unit is better though I'd still prefer that Antec unit made by Seasonic

Thanks :)  I added the Antec one to my build :D

I have sadly surpassed $1200 and am almost reaching $1300 so I might as well stop for the night before I make it any higher.
