Ok to rely on Asus Z87-Plus Power Surge Protection?

My old MOBO was bad, so I just updated my computer with a new MOBO (Asus Z87-Plus), GPU (Geforce GTX 650 manufactured by Gigabyte), RAM (Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4), HDD (WD10EZEX), and CPU (Intel i-5 4430).

Now, I'm getting the ASUS Power Surge protection problem. Other threads said it was a bad PSU. Thing is, I've had my current PSU (BFG Tech 650 watt) for years without trouble. Or, maybe it was surging and frying my old MOBO without me knowing it?

This power surge problem didn't pop up until after I installed the GPU, a few days after rebuilding with all the other parts. Since about Jan 1, I've only gotten a restart once during boot up, and once when sitting idle at the desktop. However, about 1 out of every 3 times I power-on the tower, it restarts immediately and gives me the message. Other than that, I can play Skyrim and Battlefield 4 for hours with the highest graphics without trouble (restarting from "power surge").

I wouldn't be able to get a new PSU for a few months... So my question is: If I don't do anything about it until I get a new PSU, will the surge protection help me 100%, or do I run the risk of it failing, and thus frying my MOBO? As in, since it never really shuts down during normal use (only a second after pushing the power-on button), should I just ignore the problem? Does it sounds like a PSU thing?

Thanks in advance!

Solution
yeah sounds like a failing psu. not to mention older psu's may not be compatible with newer hardware. Replace that psu. for your system, a good quality 500w unit would be more than ample with room for upgrades.

Thanks! Could you recommend any good, reliable PSU manufacturers?

Also, the "protection" is activating, which means I'm being "protected." But it doesn't happen so often as to be annoying. So, would it be dangerous for my MOBO for me to ignore the problem for a while and rely on the "protection"?

try to get a newer haswell certified psu. Reliable manufacturers are Antec, Seasonic, XFX and corsair. there are a few others but you cant go wrong with those.

Thanks a bunch. This thread can pretty much be closed, as I just bought a new PSU. I just picked up an Antec that's well within my budget, so I won't have to take my chances. This site's forums are super helpful!
