So I finished building my gaming pc a couple weeks ago without an SSD. I finally decided I should get an SSD because it would boot windows faster and load games faster. I got a SAMSUNG 840 Pro Series 128GB SSD. I want to make my windows 7 which is currently on my hard drive and a few games boot from the SSD. Is there a way to do that without deleting all the stuff on my hard drive? I don't mind a fresh install again if I have to because all I really have on the hard drive are a few games and itunes.

unplug the old drive install the new ssd. check ahci is enabled in the bios then install windows again. once thats done reconnect the old drive you were using but make sure that the ssd is made the primary boot drive so its picked up first. if your a steam user if you look on their forums there is a section that actually tells you how to move your steam install from one drive to another in a situation like this. if you mean can you copy over your old install from the current drive to the ssd i suppose you could although it would be annoying as you would have to enable things like trim that are enabled by windows during the install along with drivers etc. it all depends what you want. if its just the info and nothing specific that you cant do by just moving the info from your old drive to the new one id just go with a fresh install. plus a fresh install is sort of like that new car smell. for me at least

If you have less than about 100GB ( try not to fill a SSD with an OS on it ) then you can use any cloning software to copy everything including the hidden 100MB boot partition to the new SSD. Samsung has one on their SSD Magician disk or you can use anything else you like. I use Macrium's Reflect Free version and it works perfectly. IT's a little easier to use, but they all do the same thing.

im tired i read that again. yeh you can copy the drive over depending on how much you want. 128gig drive isnt huge though so you might not be able to image the whole things over. but some alterations might need to be made to windows for it to work on the ssd if you try to move it right across. activating achi etc. im just gonna stop now though as i can feel im too tired and rambling. im pretty sure someone else can explain better than me right now

After you are done cloning or installing fresh, make sure you use Samsung's Optimization Tool from the SSD Magician software suite. It does all the things your supposed to do after switching to a SSD in one easy step!
