So here's the snitch, I'm replacing my old capture card (a gtx 640) with a GIGABYTE gtx 670, however since my compy's built in psu isn't powerful enough (670 requires 550 watts, comp has only 500 watts) I found an old 1200 watt psu and I'm trying to power the card individually with it.

I lock it in place in the motherboard, plug in the 2, 6 pin power cables from the extra psu, take the dvi to dvi cable, plug it into my asus 1080p monitor and turn the whole thing on.

But low and behold, no signal. I try it again, no signal, not even a bios screen. By now I have called Nvidia tech support and Ahmed from india tells me I should try a different cable.

I try a different cable (dvi to hdmi) no signal. I switch them around, no signal. I chat with Ahmed again, he gave up and told me to contact GIGABYTE for help. So I did, they're all on vacation.

I take the new card out and put back in the old one, no signal. I try it again, it works (thank Caesar)

So I try and install the drivers for my new card, installation complete. I take out my old card, put back in the new one.

aaaaaaaaaaand, no signal

This is when I noticed that the fan wasn't spinning on the card, So I take out the 2 six pin power cables to figure out whats wrong. Now the fan starts spinning, with no power cables connected.

So with my hopes high I turn on my monitor again, no signal.

Please, this is my last ditch effort, help me before I commit fiery homicide on my computer.

Does it work with the 500w psu? Honestly the PSU requirement on GPUs is more of a "we know you are going to buy the cheapest thing on the market so we recommend more than what you need"

That setup shouldn't be using more than say 350w max

Hi
I think the clue here is when you say the fans don't turn until you unplug the 6 pin cables.
The 500 watt supply is providing power to the fans when you plug the 1200 watt supply in it is conflicting with the 500 watt and stopping the GPU from receiving any power.
You can count yourself very fortunate if you have not done some permanent damage to the GPU or motherboard by connecting the power supplies this way.
You need to disconnect the 500 watt power supply completely and run the whole computer from the 1200 Watt one.

"I'm trying to power the card individually with it" --- ??? your using 2 psu's? just use one good one dont mess around with it, either you have one solid psu or you dont, not two or anything

if its a branded 500w PSU it should cover it aok, if its a generic forget about it - whats the 500w psu brand/spec/model

if the card is correctly powered and installed and no signal its faulty - simple

since the psu that powers the card isn't connected to the motherboard it isn't turned on. You have to connect 2 pins from the motherboard connector to force it to turn on.

I just simply took the comps casing off and I plugged it into the wall, the thing's too large to fit in the chassis itself

It works with neither ;(

If the fans aren't spinning and/or you don't get video output from either the card or the onboard gpu while the card is plugged in, then send it back as defective.

If you do get output from the onboard gpu while the card is in there then change the video setting in the bios form onboard to PCI-E/PEG

what you mean the thing is big to fit!!! you don't have to let the psu inside the case you should just uss one psu 1200 watt cables to boot your whole system with it and not two psu ....... and also try with one stick of ram if you already have different sets from different ram manufacture

I think he means its too long
