GPU going slow at higher temps

So I just recently bought the MSI GTX 760 2GB OC it works great on lower temps but when it reaches higher temp it starts doing frame drops and stuttering.

When my GPU reaches above 80 Degrees celcius it starts lagging abit and stuttering, sometimes freezes. It's really annoying and I don't know if its a defect GPU or just that it can't handle temperatures at that level. Is this normal for a GPU to do?

That is it throttling. Reducing the temperatures will stop the throttling. Get another case fan or two, dust, etc.

If a brand new card throttles so easily, the cooler was probably badly seated. What temps you get at idle?

Well it depends on the case ventilation. You can have an amazing cooler but if you put it in a cardboard box and wrap it in duct tape the temperatures will go up.

He would have had the same issue with his previous card if ventilation was the culprit.

The 760 is a big card. His was probably a few inches shorter. That affects airflow. It also runs pretty hot.

Heat produce would be according to TDP. The 760 is very power efficient alright. Then again depends on what he was using previously.

Efficient sure, but still hot. Also big.

It runs on around 58 degrees celcius on idle. If it helps, the case is BitFenix Prodigy.

Thats very high for idle. Were you previously using another card? If so you could tell us what it was.

Also how many fans are installed on the case?

I was using GTX 460 earlier, it ran around the same, maybe abit higher at temp.

I have 1 fan in the back, and 1 in the front.

How many fans though?

The GTX 460 has a TDP of 160W, only 10W lower than the 760. If it ran even hotter then yea, it's probably bad ventilation causing the high temperatures. Consider adding more case fans and dont put the PC in corners or confined spaces.
