Low-end NAS and data encryption

Hello all, and Happy New Year.

I am an IT professional, and have been setting up NAS at work for years. However my post is for a personal issue.

At this time, I would like to purchase my first home NAS. It seems the approach will be quite different, as I would like to encrypt all the data stored to the disks (something not needed for the servers I administer). At the moment, I encrypt all my disks on my desktop PC using TrueCrypt at partition level (not file containers).

Unfortunately, the budget is not high enough to buy a NAS that supports hardware-level AES encryption (at least a QNAP which I wanted to buy).

IMPORTANT: I have to note that I do NOT need to share data or have simultaneous access. I will be the only user of my NAS. However I do need the NAS to be at least 4-bay, in order to create a RAID-5 array (not happy with RAID-1).

So here are my questions:

1. Please provide any good NAS reccomendation (max $400-$500) that fulfills my needs (so far I have been attracted only by Synology DS413J).

2. What would be the best approach in encrypting the data? For example, is it possible to mount a NAS volume to my PC via iSCSI and create/format the partition using TrueCrypt? I saw some relevant posts, but I am still not clear enough about this.

In a relevant post, I see the following:

Code:
As far as I can see, there are two options for encrypted NAS.
The first is to have an encrypted file container stored on the NAS which is mounted by the client machine.
The second is to configure a dedicated server that mounts and shares encrypted partitions.

Could the second option apply to my case, and interpreted as: Desktop PC=Dedicated Server, no shares?

3. Synology DS413J claims that it supports 'share-level encryption'. I guess this is not the same as partition-level encryption that TrueCrypt does. Am I right?

In general, based on my situation, any good direction about the whole thing would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
