Hi, i am looking for a 1u server that is quiet and capable of vmware i can only spend about £80. But it can be excorprate or used from ebay or along Those lines. Or the parts to make a cheap server i do have the hdd prior. It doesnt have to be 1u if it fits in those specifications.

More about : cheap quiet server

1u and quiet don't go together in the same sentence. In fact, I would argue that rackmount and quiet don't go together in the same sentence. I have lots of them and they are all extremely noisy.

Nope. The 4u units that I have are louder than the 1u and 2u units that I have :(

Pinhedd is right. It seems the larger the server is louder it gets because of the additional fans. Having said that, a new 2U Dell i picked up recently is much quieter then a similar one from 4 years ago. Nice it's getter better, but there isn't many options when trying to move air in a 1U, 2U environment. Going with a Tower setup may be a quieter option. Depends how hard the system get pushed.

In this situation, you can pick 2: Quiet, compact, or cheap. if you're going to want compact and cheap you'll have to look at the modern servers like Dell's 12th Gen PowerEdges (man they're quiet!), if you have to buy old kit then you'll have to sacrifice noise or small form factor. you can get 4U servers which are pretty empty inside but then again some are old tightly packed powerhouses.

At your price range and needs I don't think rack servers are for you. I'd get one of those used workstation or tower servers from Ebay instead.

On second thoughts, £80 server and VMware is going to be a struggle! the server's you'll see for under £100 on eBay wont have enough RAM to be able to run VMware usefully. if you're wanting this for a production purpose I'd suggest holding off until you can get more money or just upgrade your current kit, if it's for a home lab or non business ritical environment I'd suggest looking at a used HP microserver. I got mine for £150 with 8GB RAM and it's sitting behind me running ESXI 5.5 no problems.
