Installing window 7 using upgrade disk on New SSD?

Hi all

I'm thinking on buying a new SSD as my currently Samsung HD is over 7 years old and is starting to gave cause for concern with unscheduled shutdowns and various recommendations to repair although each time I go through the recovery and repair wizard it reveals no errors. Still I'm thinking it might be time to upgrade as I've upgraded most components to receive a score of above 7 from the windows experience scan, but my Primary Hard disk scores the lowest at 5.9.

My main question is I only have a retail full version of Windows XP which I originally installed on the Samsung HDD since then I have used upgrade media (vista and then Windows 7) to upgrade the OS.

I have all the product keys but will I be able to install directly using the Win 7 upgrade disk onto the new SSD or will I have to do a three-step process and go back to XP then Vista and finally Win 7?

Will I encounter any activation issues if I try and go straight to installing win 7 will it already know that I have it installed on my current Samsung HD?

Seeing as you have full XP and that gives you the right to use upgrade 7, I'd just use the "double install" method for 7. If you don't mind doing the phone call you can also install it, fail activation, then use the automated phone thing to do it that way.

Cheers I'll try that when the SSD arrives. On another note I have just found out from checking my BIOS that I can't find the option to change to AHCI - will this be a major issue and is there any workround you can use if your motherboard doesn't support AHCI? The SSD drive is SATA3 but my m/b is only SATA2 but I'm correct that it will still work at the lower speed?

It will work on the lower speed. If you are installing from scratch then just move the data type over to AHCI. Save, then start installing windows. When you go to install it will see the AHCI and use those drivers. It's only an issue when you load the drivers then change it without telling windows. You'll get a BSoD if you do that.

Do you know how you do this? Is it BIOS or driver related? I've checked my motherboard "AS Rock Penryn1600SLI-110dB" and I cannot find anything to change my SATA ports to AHCI - I've heard that setting it as RAID is as good as AHCI but I don't know much about RAID and weather this will make the new Win 7 install more complicated that it needs to be.

I've got myself this SSD Samsung 840 Pro which may be a bit overkill now but hey-ho I'm advised it's a good one.

My intention is to 'clean install win 7' onto my new SSD and then use my current HDD as storage for documents, files etc...

I don't have or know that board. Check the manual. I know it's usually three option, IDE, RAID, AHCI. I'd pick RAID if that's all you can find. I'm not sure if you'll have driver issues or not.

Hi sorry to come back to this, I have got the solution about how to clean install windows 7 from upgrade from link above so thanks for that, but I'm about to receive my Samsung 840 SSD today...

Do I leave my current OS active on my HDD or do I need to format it before I clean install to my new SSD? How will this affect my boot up after I have installed fresh onto SSD if I have two active OS on both HDD & SSD drives?

If I need to format my HDD (which will become my 2nd drive for storage space) what's the best way of doing this to prevent any conflicts with the fresh Win 7 install on my new SSD?

I guess if it all goes pete-tong I may have to call Microsoft because how will they know that I basically have the same legitimate copy of windows but haven't installed on two different PCs?

It won't matter. Plug in only the SSD and install windows. Once you have windows installed you can plug in any other hdds you want and use them for data. Disk Manager is your friend.

Thanks 474... you advised me something I didn't know to do, plug out my current HDD and install windows with only the SSD plugged in. I've still got internet on my tablet if I run into any issues, Cheers.
