Is a sound card worth it?

Hey I have a quick question for all of you experienced Headphone and sound card user's.

I am looking to buy this headset http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=116_1156&products_id=25384 because it has a decent mic and pretty good reviews. So I was wondering should I get a sound card or should I just use my on board sound card?

Also I am currently using Steel Series 7h and the sound quality is okay for gaming but the left ear cup is starting to be a little shit and stop working so I decided to buy a decent headset for gaming and music under $300 any other suggestions would be perfect but the headset has to have a Mic and has to be decent.

Thanks a lot - Christopher

well.. what motherboard do you have (what onboard sound?)

i would only upgrade if either you get noise/static from your current onboard or if the onboard cannot power the new headphones. otherwise i'd just use what you have.

instead of getting a soundcard getting an external DAC would likely be best.....

oh wait... look what the description says
Detachable USB DAC with built-in headphone amplifier
so it does include some sort of DAC not sure how good it is. you could always get a better one if you dont like it.

i think you're going to be fine.
