PS3: Lights are on, but no one is home. No SafeMode access.

I have a PS3 Slim, model CECH-2001A that had earlier issues starting up where upon pushing the power button, the green light would come on...but the fan spin-up and booting would take another 1-2 minutes and then work perfectly.

Now, when the power button is pushed, the green light appears but there is no fan-spin or boot-up. In following the steps to go into safemode, the unit fails to respond in the expected way (it just goes green, then back to red on holding down).

Any guidance appreciated!

I think you have to also prepare a usb thumb drive with a firmware equal to or higher than the current one installed on the console, the path should look like this; \PS3\UPDATE\PS3UPDAT.PUP

Thanks, Hairystuff. I threw a spare 2.5" drive into it but the symptoms remained the same. The drive was used and had non-relevant data on it. Does it need to be formatted a certain way first?

Just came across that too and downloaded the latest. What I need to figure out is how to get the PS3 to boot or enter into Safe Mode so I can get the new firmware on it.

Normally to enter safemode you have to press/touch and hold the power button 10 to 15 seconds.

Try this method:

Activating Safe Mode

Step 1: Turn off the PlayStation 3 by holding the Power button on the front of the unit till the Power light is red.

Step 2:

Touch and hold the Power button (do not remove your finger from the button). You will hear the first beep, meaning the PlayStation 3 is powering on.
Continue to hold the Power button and after about 5 seconds, you will hear a second beep, indicating the video reset.
Continue to hold the Power button and after about another 5 seconds you will hear a third beep and the system will power off (Power light is red).

Step 3:

Touch and hold the Power button (again, do not remove your finger from the button). As in Step 2, you will hear the first beep, again for the PlayStation 3 to power on.
Continue to hold the Power button and after about 5 seconds, you will hear a second beep for video reset.
Continue to hold the Power button and after about another 5 seconds you will hear a quick double beep. At that point release the Power button. If you succeeded in activating Safe Mode, you will see a message on the screen saying, "Connect the controller using a USB cable and then press the PS button."
