Gaming Desktop Build Help

I am looking to build a desktop primarily used for gaming. I do not have a very good understanding of the components that go into a computer, let alone how much I should spend on them.

I play Skyrim more than anything, but I would also like to be able to play newer games, which I understand is a difficult combination. My budget now is about $650, but with time I will be able to spend more, so I am not worried about going over the $1000 mark. The higher the cost, the longer the time I will be building it.

The computer build does not have to be high-end, but I would like to be able to put graphics mods and add some immersion to Skyrim. Anything is a step up from my Dell i5 laptop.

Any advice at all is greatly appreciated!

Very useful website that gives you a ton of options at different price points, even better if you shop around and get some of the parts even cheaper. The best thing is that this guide is updated regularly too!

If you have no interest in OC'ing you can skip the cooler to save more money. I'd try to aim between the Great and Superb builds with more focus on the GPU as your budget allows for the best bang for your buck.

It is a laptop though. I am not sure if i can swap out the graphics card. Along with that, I have issues when I add mods sometimes that cause my game to stop and think about what it has to do for a few seconds before actually doing it.

What is exactly does over-clocking do? Also, thank you for the site suggestion. I will have to check it out.

check your dell computer website to see if ya can upgrade for $650 you might want to go for AMD maybe the top fx range fx 8350 because ya gonna need a half decent graphic card that alone is about $100-200 motherboard &100-150 psu hard drive disc player ram case i would to play things like skyrim good quality spend about $800 just to start get a calculator out and add up the cost off what you would really like

Overclocking is basically pushing components further than the manufacturer set them. For exaple you'll see graphics cards that say things along the line of Core Clock 750Mhz. This is the speed that the component is rated at (however bigger doesn't always mean better). Overclocking is pushing that component to run at 850Mhz instead using either the BIOS or 3rd party software. The main downsides are that there is more heat produced and more power used. Most Graphics cards come pre-overclocked anyway nowadays so I wouldn't worry too much if you don't know/want to overclock.

That seems to be about the cheapest I can go without losing the performance I am trying to achieve. Thank you! Could I buy a computer of equal or better performance for the same cost or cheaper, or is this the best route?

Building one is probably the best option. You could probably buy a decent pre built one but building one is definitely the way to go.
