I have an older Dell Inspiron 1100. It cant be updated to Win7, so when the HDD died, I put a new one in it and did a fresh install of Win XP Professional. I have the latest SP3, Int Explorer 8.I can access the download site, and it just runs and runs and runs and nothing happens. Oh! I did get an avtiveX control that downloaded but that's it. How can I get the udates to download?

Microsoft is aware of this problem and is working on a solution. It only effects XP and has to do with caching the extreme number of patches that have come out since XP was first released in 2001. If you wait long enough (possibly hours) it will eventually finish. i've found it easier to turn on automatic aupdates and just wait a few days.

Update..........
I have spent the past weekend loading and reloading Win XP and Win 7 on the Dell 1100. No results in either case. With Win XP, the computer runs just fine...as long as you DONT go to Microsoft's site and try to download ANYTHING. If I do, the computer slows waaay down and takes a long time to do anything, even to change screens. I have left the computer on over night and Nada! Nothing downloads. When I get up the next day, its still running and searching but no results.
As far as Win 7 goes. It WILL run on the computer IF I want to stare at a 6"x6" screen! Why? Because there is NO chipset driver available for it for Win 7. Oh ya, I have come across lots of sites that SAY they have a driver but it is a driver for Win XP and that will NOT work with Win 7. Too bad. I really like this little Dell 1100 laptop but looks like I will have to trash it.
Any ideas out there. I would like to run Win 7 but I need a driver for an INTEL 845 graphics controller.

Another UPDATE!

I don't know what I did but, I am sitting here and my laptop is online with Microsoft Update downloading updates like it is supposed to! Either they fixed something or I dd. I did run their Fixit program and I did run their latest Download Agent. Next thing I knew it was working like it normally does!
Thanks for all the answers!
