I am building my first computer mainly for gaming and possibly some video editing etc. and I cannot decide what processor I should get. I was thinking getting an i7 and spending a little less on a GPU that will still get me the performance I need, but then though should I get an i5 and spend more money on a better GPU.

Basically should I get an i7 and upgrade my GPU later on? Or an i5 and upgrade my CPU at a later time when I have the money?

i7s have a higher clock speed and more L3 cache in addition to hyperthreading. They are also typically better binned chips as well.

Even so, if gaming is the main concern, your money is better spent on a better video card.

The difference between an i5 and an i7 is that i7 has Hyper Threading Technology, which means it uses 8 threads. That is pretty much it. I suggest to buy an i5 and invest on the GPU if you are really for gaming. If you are for video editing, rendering and all process heavy applications then go with the i7. :D
