I'm looking to build my second pc and I feel like I still don't feel 100% comfortable with picking out parts all on my own, so any advice will be very apperciated and sorry for the super long post.

PCPartPicker Link

i5-3570k
MSI Hawk GTX 760
ASRock Z77 Extreme4
G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2x4) DDR3-1866
Antec HCG M-Series 620M PSU
Cooler Master HAF 912 ATX Mid-Tower

Current Price: $775

I'm keeping my HDDs and possibly my Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO from my current pc

Approximate Purchase Date: By the end of January because I have someone lined up to buy my current pc

Budget Range: $800-$1000 I'm on a budget, but I want to make it worth upgrading

System Usage from Most to Least Important: Gaming, Schoolwork (SolidWorks, Sketchup, etc), Watching movies, Browsing the internet

Are you buying a monitor: No, I use my Vizio 23" TV (VM230XVT) and Acer 23" Monitor (S231HL)

Do you need to buy OS: No

Preferred Website(s) for Parts: No real preference, but I usually use Newegg and Amazon

Location: South Dakota

Parts Preferences: No real preference, I used AMD last time, but I wouldn't mind switching to Intel and Nvidia

Overclocking: Yes, I like tinkering with my computer and I have some decent experience from my current build

SLI or Crossfire: Maybe in the future

Your Monitor Resolution: 1920x1080

Additional Comments: I play Battlefield 4 a lot, so that's my main focus for gaming, but I also play Skyrim, Bioshock Infinite, Shift 2, and Borderlands 2. I use SolidWorks and Sketchup occasionally for school and mess around in Photoshop for fun.

Why Are You Upgrading: I like building and I want a more well designed pc than my last, cheap build.

My Current Build:

AMD FX-6300
MSI Twin Frozr HD 7850 OC
MSI 970a-G46
G.Skill Value 8GB (1x8)
Thermaltake TR-500 PSU
Rosewill Challenger ATX Mid-Tower

You have a very solid build there and I would recommend that mobo any day of the week. But I suggest you grab a i5 4670k, the price is the same and you might get a little more performance.

Thanks for the quick reply, I was going to get the 4670k, but I heard they were harder to overclock? And will the 4670k be more futureproof?

The 4670k is a bit harder to overclock, but is definitely newer and will run 5-10% faster stock. The problem with the 4670k is the temps it will reach while overclocking. If you can get an aftermarket cpu cooler or even water cooling I think it's a better choice. No intel CPU is "futureproof" due to the fact that they make a new one every year. But it will last you a while considering you treat it right!

as far as your listed parts, it looks good. i would upgrade the video card to a gtx 780 (they come in around $500) so the extra $250ish gets you 1100+ cuda cores. that will make u better prepared for 4k resolution gaming (might have to get a 2nd for sli but it will perform well)

as far as future proofing with the processor, the 4670k haswell's new features arent particularly that much more advanced as what the 3570k offers, both have pci 3.0 and usb 3.0 native. the newest tech coming out in the next few years will be DDR4 and SATA Express confirmed, then supposedly another PCI revision (4.0?) is rumored. but none of that tech will be around til after q3 of 2014. so as of right now, either processor is fine, because if u want a cpu with native controllers for those features, then u will have to upgrade to a new chip and mobo anyway.

so between the two, go with whichever is cheaper or more accessible.

but def try to squeeze in a gtx 780 into the budget, if not, a gtx770.

I think the 780 is a great choice but overkill for casual gamers, the 760 will perform just fine, and if you're concerned maybe spill some extra for a 770. You can always pick up another card for sli in the future.

Sorry, I guess I meant to ask if the 1150 socket is better for future upgrading, but after looking around, it seems like it's pretty much all the same. And the 780 is too far out of budget, but I was considering the 770 but the $80ish difference is right on the border of too much.

Well the 7850 is definitely a good card, and two in crossfire is wonderful if you ever crave higher FPS in the future. If the 80 is around reasonable before you purchase this build, I would definitely go for a 770!

I think I'll probably end up choosing the gtx 770 but if the price of amd cards go down would it be worth it to get the r9 280x for battlefield 4?

Get you a 780 but have to go with AMD FX 8350. If you want to get the intel cpu you will go over budget for about 100$.

And if the AMD Cards price go down i recommend getting the R9 290 because it's great and its not that pricey.
