I have a Gigabyte GA-z87x-ud4h mobo and an MSI GTX 760 graphics card. I have the realtek audio driver and manager installed on my Windows 8.1 Pro system. I can not get the on-board audio to work over hdmi however. If I have an hdmi out from my GPU then the sound works from the NVIDIA HD Audio, however if I have hdmi out from my mobo, I cannot get the sound to work. I just want to make sure everything is working properly.
In my playback devices manager, it defaults to Realtek Digital Output (Optical). When I test this it doesn't work however. It also recognizes Realtek Digital Output, but this doesn't work either. I have the HDMI cable going into my Denon AVR x3000 receiver.

What am I missing to get this to work?

On a side note, which audio is better, NVIDIA or realtek acl898?

I'm having this exact same problem. Set-up is a Asus Z77 Sabertooth, Gigabyte GTX 760, and Samsung HC-700W receiver. Sound works fine when it is connected GTX760 -> Samsung Audio Receiver via HDMI, but nothing with Asus z77 -> Samsung Audio Receiver via HDMI.

I have played around with all of the settings I can find, drivers are all up to date. Sound works great through the GTX 760, but acts like nothing is even connected when I just move the HDMI cable from GPU to the Mobo.

The sound also works fine if I use the Mobo's S/PDIF optical port.

Does anyone have any idea what is going on here???
