So if a motherboard needs a BIOS update for a CPU will it run the CPU at all? Sorry if this is a noob question I'm still a boob.

Solution

That depends. Most of the time it will run CPUs that are not currently supported, but new features may not work and it may not operate at its full potential. For example, it may run at a very low clock speed until the firmware is updated to support it.

Other times it may not run the new CPU at all. It's really a case-by-case basis.

Depending on the board you might be able to update it without the cpu to a BIOS version that supports the cpu..it won't "run the cpu" but it will allow you to update the BIOS to a version that allows it
