So I am looking at buying a new laptop, I am planning on using it for hardcore gaming like max graphics or close( I know gaming on a laptop supposedly an awful idea), video editing, maybe running a few personal servers every now and then, and I will be taking it to college in a about a year and a half(reason I am getting a laptop instead of a desktop). So when you mention gaming laptop, you often hear alienware, but imo alienware is overpriced junk sorry to hurt anyone's feelings. So I have 2 HP laptops picked out as listed below

ENVY TouchSmart 15t-j100 Quad Edition
Windows 8.1 64 bit (Should I pay the extra $70 and go with the pro? I'm thinking no, but open to suggestions)
4th generation I7-4700MQ ( or I could upgrade to the 4th gen. I7-4800MQ for $175 more)
Nvidea GeForce GT 740m with 2048MB
15.6" Screen with full hd at 1920x1080 (Touchscreen).
8GB DDR3 1 dimm (easier to upgrade in future if need be)
1TB 5400 rpm Hybrid hard drive
24GB flash hard drive acceleration cache
Two 6-cell lithium ions ( anyone have an aprox. battery life on those? It doesn't seem list one)
Backlit keyboard
802.11 AC WLAN and Bluetooth [2x2]
Total Price $1,213.99

OR

ENVY TouchSmart 15t-j100 Select Edition
Windows 8.1 64 bit (Again should I go with pro?)
4th gen. I7-4702MQ
NVIDEA GeForce GT 750M with 4096MB
15.6" Screen with full hd at 1920x1080 (Touchscreen).
8GB DDR3 1 dimm (Again easier to upgrade in future if need be)
1TB 5400 rpm Hybrid hard drive
24GB flash hard drive acceleration cache
Two 6-cell lithium ions (Again anyone have an aprox. battery life on those? It doesn't seem list one)
Backlit keyboard
802.11 AC WLAN and Bluetooth [2x2]
Total Price $1368.99
I don't care to pay the extra price for the one above if it is better for my purposes.
Also when I am at my house, I will have an external monitor, keyboard, and mouse, and will likely set the laptop behind the monitor so really it will serve as a desktop and laptop. Also have an external dvd drive, so that's not an issue either.
Which one do would you guys go with? Sorry for the post being so long, and I hope I have it in the right forum...

Solution

actually not, both have a stock clockspeed of 2.4GHZ and both have a TURBO clock speed of 3.4 GHZ

Please never say HP in my home again :D. I've had terrible experiences with HP and I don't recommend them! Take a look at this! http://promos.asus.com/US/G750/

The Asus ROG (Republic of Gamers) laptops are phenomenal, and I speak from personal experience with mine!

LOL! cjnnewman. i hate hp, hp is so shitty it's not funny. it's funny i had a bad experience with a hp also. btw, what's up with the 1080p? there's like laptops with 3200x1800 resolution now. even my laptop inspiron 9200 which is really old has a better resolution then that. that's poorly made already. i swear the industry is going backwards. but if you want a really good resolution screen check out the inspiron 15 from dell. from experience, i don't buy anything unless it has a good resolution. and that's just poorly made if you ask me. gotta have my resolution fix, lol.

Never looked at that those, but they look nice, the only one that I could afford, which would top my price range is the Asus ROG G750JW-DB71. I really like the 1 year accidental warrenty, because that's the last thing I would want, spend $1300 on a computer, and drop it or something lol, that would be my luck. Would the Asus ROG G750JW-DB71 perform better than either of those, and also with the cooling, I did not see any cooling features on the HP's which concerns me as heat is one of the quickest killers, which I saw on the Asus. I also get a discount on the HP's as I am an employee at a place where we get discounts with them. So they would be a bit cheaper, I think it's less than 10% though so nothing major.

The DB71 will out-perform both HP's by miles, and when they're overheating the ROG will keep powering on at low temps. If I could recommend any laptop in the world it'd be out of the ROG series!

Ehh Dell, not a huge fan, they have seemed to go down recently. I have never had a problem with anything from Hp, and I have purchased aprox. 5 pc's from them or Compaq which they own, but never anything of this value. But I do get a discount at dell too, so I may look into that one.

I do like lenovo, heard good things about them, but have never used them. Would it keep up with the DB71? also, I really wanted the touchscreen, as I believe it would make windows 8 more enjoyable, and college easier, Niether of those have that do they? And battery life will play a factor when I get to the college days. The DB71 is kinda pushing the size of too big for mobility also.

performance compared to DB71 with GTX765M/770M

Battlefield 4 - 1920x1080 Ultra Preset AA:4x MS

GT755M SLI - 31.9 fps
GTX 765M - 19.7 FPS
GTX 770M - 26.5 FPS

Crysis 3 - 1920x1080 Very High Preset AA:2xSM AF:16x

GT755M SLI - 20.6 FPS
GTX765M - 14.2 FPS
GTX770M - 19.3 FPS

Battery life is poor with both GPU's in the laptop, around 2-3 hrs, BUT you can physically remove the 2nd gpu ( ultrabay, very simple )

start the laptop, download intel drivers, and there, you have optimus enabled ( so basically now you can use the laptops IGPU )
and extend the battery life to +5 hours probably.

and again when you need the extra GPU performance just pop it back in.

and the asus weighs +5 kg with charger, Lenovo weighs 3.5kg with charger

the dell is touchscreen. i can assure you, you will not regret a inspiron 15 with a 3200x1800 resoultion screen. that's what i would buy if i had the money for it. trying to find a new job so i can get it. i never really had a problem wih a dell before. plus you get a discount. hp's are so iffy dude.

dude, sli won't matter compared to a high resolution screen, that's not a good trade off. even my old inspiron 5150 can beat almost anything on resolution view with a radeon mobility 9000 which is a very old card. they are going backwards because they don't want to don't want to take the price bashing on computers, thank god dell as usual being in the lead for a good reason got on the ball and decided to bring out a nice resolution screen. again, i would buy it if i had the money. it's the next best thing since sliced bread.
