Are channels 1,6,11 necessarily the best?

I recently downloaded inssider which allows me to monitor all the wireless networks around me (unfortunately I live in an apartment) and it suggested that I switch my channel to either 1,6 or 11, specifically suggesting 11 because it had the least congestion. I have also looked into this a bit more and done my own research and I understand why this may be the case. However, what I find is that when I set the channel to 11 (also tried 1,6), my speed falls quite considerably. When set to auto (it currently chooses channel 8) I get around 25 down and 6 up but when setting to the supposedly best channels, I might get around 6 down and 3 up. What's up?

Yes, 1, 6, and 11 are usually the best because they are non-overlapping. Look at the first chart HERE to see how the channels overlap. Note that 8 falls right between the channel 6 and 11 frequency umbrellas.

If you have too much interference due to neighbors those channels may not work at all, and you should actually feel lucky that 8 is giving you that much speed. The 2.4GHz wireless spectrum is way overloaded and was never intended to carry all the bandwidth and be as common as it turned out to be. For now, 5GHz is usually pretty good, although eventually that too will end up overcrowded.

It's good to have 5GHz now with the overcrowded 2.4GHz, but no consumer level connection, particularly wireless (including AC1900) beats gigabit cable at 850-880Mbps and no interference or lag issues. :D
