Found some details about Beowulf cluster and was curious what software I need for this. Also, what it would be good for today?
What hardware does this actually support?
Just processing power or..?

I'm more or less taking some older computers and going too attempt this for a learning experience.

Beowulf Clusters are generally used for research or scientific computing. They are also known as High Performance Computing(HPC) or supercomputers. Clusters tie multiple computers together for parallel processing power. They run applications for finite element analysis, computation fluid dynamics. Genome research, and bioinformatics for example.

Look at ROCKS cluster management suite as potential software to create a cluster. The hardware for the most part is agnostic. The computers don’t have to be identical. Most clusters are Linux based, but Windows has an option if you want to go that direction. You just have to pay the licensing.
