That board listing says

"The board features SLI/CrossFire on Demand technology, supporting up to Quad-GPU SLI or Quad-GPU CrossFireX configuration. Whichever path you take, you can be assured of jaw-dropping graphics at a level previously unseen.
"

but it only has 3 16x pcie slots...... is number 4 putting the last card in a 1x slot??

Dual GPU cards (GTX 690, HD 7990, etc) in an sli/xfire. Two cards, four chips.

No, you buy two cards like the GTX 690 and put each of them in one slot. Each GTX 690 contains two GPUs in SLI, so you end up with quad-sli.

that mean someday they will have 6x and 8x? I know I've seen boards with 4 pcie 16 slots.... though wonder what overhead that would introduce
