How can I check or fix HDD problems

I runned CHKDSK on boot, and it is freezing on 31%
It is all because my PC is freezing on idle, when I stop working (almost as soon as I leave my desk for 10m).
I use windows XP.
Do u know how to check for HDD errors?
Thanks in advance!

This can be very useful, I use it a lot. Try it :) I am pretty sure it is compatible with all hard drives.

Any way you can tell us what hdd you have (brand name/details)?
