So on my case i want to install a rear fan to exhaust out hot air. Well on the motherboard (its a dell precision 690), there's a 5pin connector being used by the ran on my ram. In doing so, my main question is, is it possible to buy a cheap 4 pin splitter and put it into the 5 pin port. Which would run two new 120mm fans (one for the rear and one for the ram)

On the precsion 690 motherboard, the "pin out" is a 5pin fan port. I am worried about frying out something if it went wrong. i know people have have taken a normal 4pin out and used a 3 pin splitter to connect two 3 pin fans successfully. so shouldnt the same principles apply is this situation?

Unless you know the pinout of the cable, this is what you want:

i see what your saying and i would totally get this, but, its just another cable in my case. on top of a splitter. i was looking at something like this that i could plug into the 5pin out on the motherboard but its a 4pin out. Hence my original question.

Right, and as already mentioned, unless you know the pinout and rewire the splitter you risk burning out the fan header on your motherboard. Hence why I suggested getting a cable that is actually designed to do what you want to do. Or just burn out the fan header, its your board not mine.
