I live in a quite old building and my apartment walls are VERY thick, so the signal is obviously having trouble to get through them , I recently updated my internet plan to 100 mbps, my provider had me upgrade the modem to be able to take advantage of the speed, the bad news is that the new modem is a modem with a router included without a WAN port so I cannot use the modem+ a router (like I previously did) and the modem/router's signal strength is horrible, worse than it was with the old one, if I sit next to the modem/router I get 80 mbps (using speedtest), I close the door of the room where the modem/router is and walk to my room, which is about 20 meters away from it, I get 50 Mbps (again using speedtest), with my cellphone is even worse, I get 34 mbps next to the router and 13 mbps on my room.
So my question is, is it possible to configure one of the LAN ports that the modem/router has, to try and connect my old router to it and see if I get better signal , in case I don't , could I get a good router like the Asus RT-AC68U or should I upgrade the Modem/router and stop using the sh**ty one that my provider uses and get a good one like the Asus DSL-N66U (modem+ router included) .
Something I don't get is, if a Modem/router uses less space, the quality its just as good, and the prices similar, even without having external antennas, then why do companies keep releasing modems and routers separately?
Thank you for the help, I know it was a messy explanation on my problem
