Hi,
I hope I can get some advice about these cards. I know that they are way outdated but at the moment I am quite short in cash after using up most of it assembling the other parts. I just needed something to sustain me till I save up for a better card (maybe in a year).
All I needed to know is how these cards can perform today gaming wise? (that is in SLI). I am able to get 2 GTX460 Hawk Talon Attack 1GB cards both @ $150. So far the old reviews that I have read have shown that these cards in SLI have a decent performance especially on 1080p resolution. But this is back in 2011.
So as at 2014, can these cards give me decent frame rates with today's games at 1080p? Are they able to game at High settings? Also, is there a modern card that I can compare them to? Your contributions/suggestions/opinions will be much appreciated

My Specs:
Motherboard - Asus Maximus IV Extreme-Z
Processor - i7 3770 @ 3.4ghz
Ram - G-Skill Ares 16GB DDR3 (4GBx4) CL10 @ 2133mhz
PSU - Corsair RM750w 80+Gold
CPU Cooler - cooler master hyper 212 plus
SSD - Micron RealSSD C400 256GB SATA 2.5"

Oh for sure, most games will get high settings,
What you have there is an vram issue not so much a performance issue.
Have you looked for more used cards? A gtx 580 goes for around that same price and will get you the extra .5GB of vram which will make a difference.

I'd honestly skip the SLI 460. Like spentshells said, a 580GTX is more powerful than a 460s in SLI. A 480 GTX is equal to a 650TI and you can get those for sub $150. A single 650 TI will equal in power, cooler and use less wattage.

gtx660's can be had for under $200 and would probably perform better.

Well SLI 460's is more powerful than a stock 580 it is simply missing the ram which is a big factor with recent games.

Yeah, but we're talking about 5-10 frames. That's not monumental or a significant difference. While SLI 460s is great, the OP can spend $150 now on old tech. And then x-amount later to replace the old. Or he can spend the 150 on the 650 TI and have similar performance with newer tech.

650ti isn't really comparable to the 460's or the 580.

The 650 ti boost however is pretty close and pretty affordable as well.

From where I am, Its hard to get a gtx580. The cheapest so far is $300. For a gtx660,650Ti I can only get the cheapest for $200, but Comparing the performance to price, I see much value in buying the gtx460's over the others. Or what is your position on this? Would like to know if there is more to this than just price to performance...maybe i could change my mind :)
As for power consumption, I don't mind A lot since I believe I will not be using them for long Plus I bet bigger cards consume more power than these two combined

spentshells according to the link provided by JimmoR3M, It shows that at 1080p resolution, all benchmarks of gtx 460 SLI are better than gtx580. Even though this is in 2010, does this significantly change for games made in 2013?

Well the textures are starting to get over 1GB of memory usage depending on the settings used and the games you plan on playing.

Honestly those two 460's are actually pretty super cards, once you get to overclocking them. If that is the best option available and it sounds like it is, take it you won't feel regret it.

Having the extra vram would be nice but not absolutely needed, just turn down the settings.

Well to each their own. Either way, the OP will be please with performance.

would a 660gtx not be a better choice than 2 older cards like that?
