I am currently using a HIS Radeon 7870 ghz edition iceQx Turbo 2gb graphics card in my computer.

However my cpu is only a QuadCore AMD Phenom II X4 Black Edition 955, 3200 MHz with a

Asus M4A89GTD Pro/USB3 AMD 890GX, AMD K10 motherboard and 8GB 1333mhz ram clocked to 1600mhz.

I have begun playing battlefield 4 with this setup but i am not satisfied with the current FPS i get from this game and feel my graphics card should be able to produce at least a stable 60fps@1080p wich is my gaming resolution.

i am running win7 64bit and have a corsair force 3 gt 120gb ssd with windows and the game installed on it.

My current fps if i run BF4 at medium settings in a 64p multiplayer match barely ever reaches 60 fps.

I want to upgrade but if the card is enough for a while longer i will rather dish out for a new cpu as my mobo supports the FX6300/6350 or higher already.

Would it be the best solution to just invest in a new 6350 cpu ?

Thanks for any help and advice i can get.

I know that BF3 multiplayer is highly cpu dependent.
I assume BF4 is also.
Your cpu is still quite good, and I do not think you will do much better with a amd upgrade.

Intel cpu cores are much stronger. I think you are looking at a i5-4670K type upgrade if multiplayer is your game.

To test,
Limit your cpu, either by reducing the OC, or, in windows power management, limit the maximum cpu% to something like 50%.
This will simulate what a lack of cpu power will do.

Go to control panel/power options/change plan settings/change advanced power settings/processor power management/maximum processor state/
set to 50% and see how you do.

You could also experiment with removing one core in the bios. This will tell you how sensitive your games are to the benefits of many cores.

If your FPS drops significantly, it is an indicator that your cpu is the limiting factor, and a cpu upgrade is in order.

Ah well guess a motherboard upgrade would have to be an option also. Im on somewhat of a budget or else an upgrade to a intel i5 solution would be interesting.

Thnx for the answer!

Well i actually tried just OC'ing my CPU to 3.5GHZ and juiced up the GFX card quite a bit. Now im running steady 70+ fps with a nice mix of high/ultra/medium settings.

I am now quite satisfied !

Yeah, if you have a good aftermarket cooler on that CPU you should be able to get closer to 4Ghz with a bit of work.... important on those multiplayer maps

Also, as 7870's are being closed out / replaced, I'd suggest you keep an eye out for a second card at a close out price. Two 7870's in CrossFire would rock most games for a few more years (Your motherboard supports its but check that power supply size thou.. a strong 650 or 750watt unit will do the deed..)

PERFECT post, sooo many folks are sooo hung up on "CPU bottlenecking my games..." and there is sooo little truth to that until you drop back to Dual core or some really ancient process, thanks for posting...

Hey, its all about the GPU........... (for FPS)
