One of my HDD drives has malfunctioned and all the files were turned to RAW.I used a recovery program and have recovered the files i wanted to keep and as far as i know the next step is to format.I wanted to ask if there is a suggested tool for better formatting instead of windows format and if there is anything else i should do before/after to prevent this from happening again/fix what caused it etc.

I format all drives from within Windows 8.1 Pro. Anything over 2TB is formatted as GPT as it provides redundancy, writing the GPT header and partition table both at the beginning and at the end of the disk.

Then there is exFAT however its all in the beholder, what may work for some may not work for others.

There are many utilities/tools on the net however these tools will not keep the issue from happening again.
RAW file system is a state of the hard drive or other storage device which has no known Windows file system.
Because no file system exists on the drive, there can be no files or folders on the drive, and it cannot be used to store data.

You can read more here:

Its MS so it's equally good. However as I mentioned before GPT is not any better than home grown NTFS.
I have read on the on the *tubes* whereby corruption can occur on any file system including Linux/Unix and other variants of OS.
What happened to your HDD does happen to others and though its rare it can/will happen.

On a side note I have the paid versions of Paragon and Macrium and honestly speaking, they too include partitioning and formatting tools however they are no different nor better than the native MS tools. Hell they are the same as NTFS is NTFS; a defacto standard to say the least.

I would not worry too much about it though and good luck
