My brother's laptop (ASUS X54C) recently started having some serious issues. He says that a windows message box kept popping up for him, but it wouldn't display when he opened it. When it finally did open, his computer froze, the screen switched to low-resolution, and the cursor changed to a loading icon. At this point, he left his computer for a while to see if the problem would fix itself. (I only saw the message on screen briefly before he forced the computer off. It had something to do with the program iSyncr which is used to translate music from iTunes to an mp3 format for his android phone.) After we forced it off, we tried a reboot. When we tried booting it normally, it would freeze at the login screen, sometimes you could type a few characters into the password box, but it would always freeze. Booting it up in safe mode seemed to work okay, but the computer was working very slowly. I went through msconfig and turned off almost all boot programs and services except microsoft, intel, ASUS, and virus software. (I have the same programs turned off on my computer, so I knew it was safe) Booting in normal mode lasted a little bit longer, but it would still freeze before we could get past the login screen. All of this happened the day before we went on vacation for a week. We left my brother's computer at home, turned off, while we were away. Now that we are back, when we try to boot the computer, the message "Error loading operating system" displays. Now come my questions. What can I do? I was planning on creating a backup copy of Windows from my computer (as I still haven't) and booting his computer with that, or do the same with a downloaded copy of Linux/Ubuntu, but I'm not sure if that will even work. I don't even know what is wrong with the computer: I can't find a straight answer on the internet. Is it infected? Is the OS corrupted? Is something else corrupted? Where do I start?
Thank you.
